NATIONAL COOPERATION REGARDING AVANCED THERAPY MEDICINAL PRODUCTS (ATMP DENMARK)

The Danish Ministry of the Interior and Health, Danish Regions and Amgros are establishing a national cooperation structure across regions, universities, the pharmaceutical industry and relevant authorities to promote the development and implementation of advanced therapy medicinal products in the healthcare system. Rapid technological and scientific developments are advancing advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), such as gene therapies and cell therapies, and these therapies hold great potential for patients. Denmark is well positioned to become a pioneer in the development and implementation of ATMPs thanks to the Danish life science industry and strong professional environments at hospitals and universities. However, there is a need for strategic initiatives to address challenges in the area and strengthen collaboration between key players from the healthcare system, the research community and the pharmaceutical industry.

The framework conditions for clinical research must be strengthened to make it easier for clinical environments to initiate trials and to attract more clinical trials to Denmark. The transition from research to treatment must be supported, both for the academic community and to make it more attractive to place ATMPs on the Danish market. And in the long term, there has to be a single point of entry for clinicians, researchers and companies – in terms of knowledge, guidance and collaboration.

These are some of the goals in the Terms of Reference for the new national cooperation structure for ATMP Denmark. The cooperation structure consists of a steering committee and a reference group.

As part of the initiative, analyses and pilot projects will be carried out to identify challenges and possible solutions to promote the development and implementation of ATMPs.

The initiative stems from the political agreement on the Strategy for life science 2024-2027. DKK 18.5 mill. has been earmarked for the initiative in the period 2024-2027.
Amgros is responsible for project management and secretariat services for ATMP Denmark. An important task in this context will be to support the national collaboration and coordinate efforts across regions, universities, the pharmaceutical industry and relevant authorities.
