Sustainability

We live in a time of serious challenges. Therefore, the world’s countries have adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the Paris Agreement, they are obligated to keep the global temperature rise below two degrees. In Denmark, the regions has set a targit to reduce the health care systems carbon footprint by 50 % by 2045. Achieving these goals demands huge efforts from everyone.

At Amgros, we want to help with our contribution to a greener future.

We have worked hard to make the supply of hospital medicines more sustainable. We have done so because we want to support current health needs without compromising the health of future generations.

WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA FOR MANY YEARS

At Amgros, we have been working for many years to make the supply of hospital medicines more sustainable. We have done so because we want to support current health needs without compromising the health of future generations.

We have published national tendering procedures for medicines with environmental criteria since 2021 - among others covering: Hormone medicines, IV antibiotic, inhalation medication, treatments against psoriasis, antiprotozoal treatments and ophthalmological treatments.

Criteria have covered:

  • Packaging - with outset in the Nordic criteria for more sustainable packaging

  • Transport (last mile)

  • Energy efficiency of production of water for injection

  • Prevention of antibiotic resistence

  • Inhalation spray with lower carbon footprint

  • Take back scheme of inhalation devices

Together with Norway and Iceland, we have completed a joint Nordic tendering procedure with environmental criteria since 2022. Among other things, we have focused on antibiotic resistence.

In 2024, we entered into new agreements on hearing aids. The environmental criteria included in the tender concerned:

  • Limiting plastic types, including PVC
  • Reducing the frequency of deliveries of hearing aids to hearing clinics to limit unnecessary transport

Additionally, we continuously collaborate with suppliers and hearing clinics to reduce resource consumption related to hearing aids1234.

One of our latest initiatives is stricter requirements in our framework agreements. This means that suppliers must observe the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Work on a more sustainable supply of medicines will undoubtedly take us into some of the dilemmas involved in balancing security of supplies of medicines on the one hand, and consideration for our environment and global warming on the other. However, we are determined to find balanced solutions so that security of supply and sustainability do not become two conflicting factors
